Stay safe on the Norfolk Broads

Safety tips when hiring a boat on the Norfolk Broads

What are the rules?

Hiring a boat on the Norfolk Broads is an exciting and enjoyable experience, but it's essential to prioritise safety to ensure a smooth and memorable trip.

  1. Choose a reputable day boat hire company:

Research and select a reputable company with a good track record for safety and customer satisfaction. Check online reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or locals.

  2. Attend a safety briefing:

Before setting off, be attentive to the safety briefing provided by the company. This briefing should cover essential information about the boat's operation, navigation rules, and safety equipment. At Martham Ferry we invite you to arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of your hire so we can get you briefed and in lifejackets in plenty of time so you don’t lose time - out on the water. Familiarise yourself with the boat: Take time to get to know the boat and its systems before you leave the dock. Understand how to operate the motor, steering controls, and other systems.

  3. Follow navigation rules:

The Norfolk Broads can be busy with various watercraft, so it's crucial to follow navigation rules and guidelines. Pay attention to speed limits, these are mostly 4 or 5 miles per hour depending on where you are on the water. There should be only a gentle wake behind the boat, this protects the banks, low-lying properties and nesting birds.

  4. Keep to the Right:

Boats on the Norfolk Broads should keep to the right-hand side of the waterways. This ensures a consistent flow of traffic and helps prevent collisions.Mooring: Only moor your boat in designated mooring areas or where it is allowed, these are clearly marked. Do not obstruct navigation channels or other boaters.

  5. Overtaking:

When overtaking another vessel, maintain a safe distance and reduce your speed to minimize wash. Indicate your intention to overtake using sound or hand signals.Bridges and Low Headroom: Be cautious when passing under low bridges or structures. Check for clearance and use the bridge pilot wherre instructed by your hirer.

  6. Wear life jackets:

Ensure that everyone onboard wears a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) at all times, especially when getting on and off your boat. At Martham Ferry we provide all our adult customers with comfortable self-inflatting life jackets and children fully adjustable life vests.Don't drink and boat: Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, so it's crucial to avoid drinking alcohol while operating the boat. Designate a responsible skipper who must remain sober throughout the journey.

  7. Give way to any craft without a motor:

Sailing Vessels: Powered vessels should give way to sailing vessels, canoes, and rowboats, as these vessels are less manoeuvrable under engine power. The only exception is a power boat towing (rescuing) another boat.Be respectful of wildlife and the environment: The Norfolk Broads are rich in wildlife and natural beauty. Appreciate the environment, avoid disturbing the wildlife, and dispose of rubbish properly.

  8. Keep emergency contacts handy:

Save important phone numbers like the boat hire company, this information is placarded at the front of the boat where the driver can easily see it, on Martham Ferry Day Boats.

By following these safety tips and rules, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable boating experience on the Norfolk Broads. Enjoy your trip and make lasting memories!
